Material Test Methods for Fungal, Bacterial and Algal

ISO 20645 - Specifies a method for the determination of the effect of antibacterial treatments applied to woven, knitted and other  textiles. ISO 20645 is for testing bacteria, antibacterial, bactericide properties. Also known as ISO 20645:2004.

ISO 11721-2 - Is a laboratory test procedure for identification of the long-term resistance of a fungi rot-retardant finish against the attack of microorganisms in the soil. ISO 11721 is for testing fungi and fungal resistance in a simulated rot test. Also known as ISO 11721-2:2003

ISO 16869 - A laboratory test method for determining the effectiveness of fungistatic or antifungal compounds in protecting susceptible ingredients like plasticizers. ISO 16869  is resistance to fungi or the efficacy of fungicide product or antifungal material.

ISO 22196 -   Based on the method of JSA JIS Z 2801 and is used in testing consumer products for antibacterial performance, particularly silver treated products. The ISO 22196, will detect bactericidal activity in plastics, resins and other durable consumer antimicrobial products.

ISO 846 - Determination of behavior under the action of fungi and bacteria. ISO 846 or ISO 846:1978 test method is used to evaluate deterioration of a material by fungi, or bacteria.

ISO 8692 -  Freshwater algal growth inhibition test with unicellular green algae.  Basic assessment for determining antialgal properties or toxicity for a liquid formulation.

Related to OECD 301, and ASTM Methods.

International Organization for Standardization

ISO provides microbial test methods for testing plastics; Situ Biosciences are experts in antimicrobial plastic testing. ISO test methods include those for antimicrobial products and biodegradation and compostability.

ISO Standards

For Microbiological Tests

There are great efforts to implement harmonized microbial testing methods for bacteria, fungi, algae, biodegradation and compost testing.  Currently a large number of ASTM, JIS, AATCC and EPA protocols have been harmonized as international standards.

There are still potentially significant distinctions betweens these methods that may need to be assessed depending on the product and the claims targeted.
