OECD 310 – Ready Biodegradation – CO2

OECD 310 is an aerobic biodegradation test that predominantly measures ready biodegradability by the evaluation of CO2 in sealed vessels.

In the OECD 310 test method, the CO2 evolution resulting from the ultimate aerobic biodegradation of the test substance is determined by measuring the inorganic carbon (IC) produced in sealed test bottles. dropStandard testing for OECD 310 is 28 days, similar to other ready biodegradability test methods. OECD 310 is applicable to water-soluble and insoluble test substances, however, good dispersion of the substance must be ensured.

To perform an Environmental Fate Analysis for different types of products, biodegradability testing is an important component. Customers commonly request Biodegradability, Toxicity and Bioaccumulation testing simultaneously to meet regulatory requirements and to gain market acceptance.  The EU Ecolabel for Lubricants requires data for these different components and lists OECD 306 and OECD 310 as the recommended Ready Biodegradability test methods. It is highly recommended to review testing requirements with the appropriate agency prior to testing to determine which biodegradation method is required for labeling claims and regulatory acceptance.

Prior to testing, it is important to know the organic carbon content of the test substance, so that the percentage degradation may be calculated. Additionally, information on the material toxicity to microorganisms is helpful in selecting an appropriate test concentration and for interpreting poor biodegradability results.

When requesting biodegradation testing, it is important to communicate material properties with the testing laboratory. There are many chemical and physical properties that can impact biodegradability testing; for more information on how a material’s chemical or physical properties can affect biodegradability testing, please visit our Biodegradability Testing – Chemical Impacts page.
