      The core of the ASTM D6400 series, ASTM D5338 is used to determine the degree and rate of aerobic biodegradation of plastic materials in a controlled composting environment. ASTM D5338 determines ready and ultimate biodegradation values for a plastic or solid material.

Biodegradability can vary greatly for products made of the same material. Different gauges and formulations can affect the rate of biodegradation. Even color can affect biodegradation.

Biodegradability tests for solid materials are most commonly ASTM D6400 and ASTM D5338. Used for plastics and paper, ASTM D6400 and ASTM D5338 are globally recognized aerobic biodegradation standards.

Liquid Biodegradability: we perform ready and ultimate biodegradable determinations of formulations and their additives adhering to ASTM, EPA, ISO, MIL-PRF and OECD biodegradability standards. The most common method for determining biodegradability in a solution is OECD 301B used for determining aerobic biodegradation.

Biodegradability Test Harmonization: Biodegradability testing is evolving to meet the needs of the market. ASTM and ISO for example have streamlined the test process and have led the way in harmonizing biodegradation standards for the global marketplace.

Biodegradability Claims: Making marketing claims about a product is beyond our scope as an independent third party test lab. We can only test products using recognized biodegradation methods that show a products ability to biodegrade in a controlled laboratory environment.
