Foam

Foam can present an interesting environment for microbes to thrive in.

Not only are foams generally concealed under covers and layers, foam is often exposed to a variety of possible food sources that may encourage microbial growth.

Foam Testing

Microbial growth in foam can pose a problem, especially when the foam is contained in bedding and not easily accessible

Foam testing can vary depending on whether the material is hydrophobic or hydrophilic. Common foam tests include AATCC 30 (7 and 14 day versions), the more stringent ASTM G21 and JIS Z 2801. Foams used in military products are often run to MIL-STD 810G.

Durability Testing for Foam

Durability testing is also recommended when testing the efficacy of antimicrobials in foam. Durability tests simulate actual conditions the material may be exposed to and can provide valuable data for how the product may be used by the end-customer.

Our lab recommends antimicrobial foam testing for a range of products and materials including bedding, furniture, vehicle and aviation chairs, and for products to be used in medical facilities.

Manufacturing plants themselves can be a source of contamination and production lots are often screened for microbial growth prior to delivery to the end-customer
