Metalworking

Metal Working Fluids (MWF) are often used in exposed environmental conditions that can lead to microbial growth.

Given the range of microorganisms that can be found in industrial settings, contamination of MWF can occur quickly and may lead to production and health/safety issues.

MWF tests can run for a set duration or until failure, depending on the agenda of the project.  To determine when a product will succumb to microbial growth, running tests until product failure is recommended.

MWF test options include microbial abundance screens for microbial activity and preservation challenge testing, including the culturing of specific inoculum as requested. For ATP screens, the lab can set up a range of parameters, from no microorganisms present to whatever level is acceptable at a specific site or in industry.

Preservation challenges tests an additive to a range of conditions and over several time options.  Additional parameters can be tested with conditions simulated in the lab that can include iron-ship corrosion, pH, temperature and UV.

ASTM E2275 test options for MWF antimicrobial additives includes quick kill (biocidal), 12 day bioresistance and longer term preservation challenge tests. Additional metal working fluid test methods include ASTM E2694, a metalworking fluids test method that utilizes rapid ATP testing for Quality Control and Preservation testing.
