ASTM E2362 – Towelettes – Hard Surface Disinfection Test

The ASTM E2362 method is a standard antimicrobial test for evaluation of pre-saturated or impregnated towelettes utilized for hard surface disinfection. This ASTM method allows to determine if pre-saturated or impregnated towelettes used as hard surface disinfectants exhibit antimicrobial activity.

Disinfectant testing is performed under laboratory conditions. Nonporous carriers are inoculated with the selected microorganism culture, allowing the inoculum to disperse uniformly and then dry. The sample, a towelette pre-saturated or impregnated with a test substance, is then used to treat the inoculated carrier by wiping, which applies the test substance onto the carrier. Once applied, the test substance remains on the surface for a defined period of time. Following the specified exposure interval, the test substance is neutralized and the surviving microorganisms are recovered to determine the microorganism reduction or disinfectant efficacy. Such practice provides a quantitative result for the applied test substance.

The ASTM E2362 test can be performed against various microorganisms such as  bacteria, mycobacteria, and fungi. Standard microbial strains tested in the method include:

  • Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus)
  • Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa)
  • Mycobacterium bovis (M. bovis)
  • Trichophyton mentagrophytes (T. mentagrophytes)

At Situ Biosciences, we can provide testing against non-standard microorganisms as well.

Regulatory requirements may include testing in accordance with the Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) guidelines. Our laboratory can provide both GLP or non-GLP testing.

For antimicrobials with intended claims, it is highly recommended for customers to contact the appropriate regulatory agencies to confirm the necessary testing criteria for their products.
