ASTM D2020 – Antifungal Paper Test
ASTM D2020 is a legacy antifungal test method that provides a qualitative determination of fungal (mildew) resistance of paperboard.
This antimicrobial test method is commonly used for paperboard that has been given a fungus-resistant treatment.
Standard testing for ASTM D2020 runs for 14 days and tests a material’s resistance to a standard fungal inoculum.
In the ASTM test method D2020, three standard organisms tested against include C. globosum, A. terreus, and A. niger.
Two options for testing can be performed:
- The direct inoculation method is recommended for paper products that are expected to be used or stored in a damp, warm atmosphere but do not come into direct contact with damp soil.
- The soil burial method is recommended for papers with or without fungus resistant treatment that may be in contact with damp soil for long periods of time.
Paper products intended to have antimicrobial resistant properties must be appropriately tested for both anti-bacterial and anti-fungal performance to assure a durable, problem-free product.
Paper fibers are naturally consumable by microorganisms and will require a range of technologies to prevent microbial colonization of the material.
Customers also commonly request ASTM D3273 to measure the antimicrobial performance of treated paperboard. This approach allows manufacturers to test a variety of additive concentrations and choose the most effective antimicrobial to use in product production.
