ASTM D93 – Flash Point Test

ASTM D93 determines the flash point of a test substance by a Pensky-Martens closed-cup apparatus.

flashpoint_penskyFlash point is the lowest temperature at which an ignition source causes the vapors of the test sample to ignite under specified conditions of test.  The flash point temperature then determines the tendency of the test specimen to form a flammable mixture with air when under these controlled laboratory conditions.

There are three procedures covered by ASTM D93 that can be utilized depending on the test temperature, type of liquid or low melting solid; these are known as Procedure A, B and C.

Customers commonly request flash point testing when registering a pesticide with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) or for the Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH).

When testing for regulatory or third party labeling, it is highly recommended to contact the appropriate agency to determine which testing will meet specific requirements for registration and product claims.
