ASTM E1053: Efficacy of Virucidal Agents Intended for Inanimate Environmental Surfaces
ASTM E1053 is an antimicrobial product test intended to determine the virucidal efficacy of antimicrobials on environmental surfaces. A variety of antimicrobial products such as liquids, aerosols, or spray solutions designated for inanimate and nonporous surfaces can be evaluated by the ASTM E1053 laboratory method.
ASTM E1053 can be performed against a broad range of viral strains. The method utilizes cell cultures as host systems for specific viruses and is applicable for testing antimicrobial products to determine their virucidal efficacy. Commonly requested strains include the Influenza and Coronavirus families:
- Influenza A virus (H1N1 and H3N2)
- Feline calicivirus
- Feline coronavirus
- Human coronavirus* (OC43)
*SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) currently not available.
The ASTM E1053 test is conducted at standard laboratory conditions; however, additional test requirements such as organic soil load or hard water may be accommodated into the testing. The viral suspension is dried up on a nonporous surface, and the test product is added over the suspension as instructed (per label directions). A harmless buffer solution of an equivalent volume is added to the control sample. The test samples and the control are then evaluated at customer-specified time-point(s).
For the purpose of product registration, regulatory requirements may include testing in accordance with the Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) guidelines. Our laboratory can provide both GLP or non-GLP testing. We highly recommend contacting the appropriate agencies to confirm the necessary testing criteria.
Similar test methods designated to assess the antimicrobial effectiveness of a product include ASTM E1052, ASTM E1153.
