ASTM E1259 – Antimicrobial Test – Fuel

ASTM E1259 is a standard antimicrobial test for the evaluation of antimicrobials in liquid fuels boiling below 390°C.

This antimicrobial test method is used to evaluate the relative efficacy of microbicides in liquid fuels boiling below 390°C. The effect of environmental conditions such as the different types of fuel additives, metal surfaces, humidity, temperatures, and climates can be included for specific material tests using this protocol.

Antimicrobial additives are often crucial to the effective use, transportation, and storage of fuels and oils. To ensure proper functioning of the antimicrobial application for fuels, test methods like ASTM E1259 have been developed and are used in a range of industries. ASTM E1259 options include the long-term preservation study (often a standard 8 weeks) and a shorter term quick kill. For this type of testing, corrosion testing can also be included.

Other types of fuel testing that customers commonly request include Biodegradation and Environmental Fate & Toxicology testing.

Additional Testing Information

  • The preservation test subjects the fuel and additive to increasing microbial challenges until the additive no longer works.
  • The quick kill test option quantifies a specified kill range in a given time.
  • Environmental conditions affect the efficacy of microbicides and include fuel additives, metal surfaces, and climatology. These variables can be included in specific tests as long as the protocol is followed.
