OECD 105 – Water Solubility

OECD 105 determines the water solubility of a substance.

OECD 105 determines the water solubility of essentially pure substances which are stable in water and not volatile. It is important to note that the presence of impurities can considerably affect the water solubility of a substance.

It is recommended to have preliminary information on the test substance’s structural formula, vapor pressure, dissociation constant and hydrolysis as a function of pH prior to conducting Water Solubility testing. Customers commonly request OECD 112 to determine the Dissociation constant and OECD 111 for the Hydrolysis as a function of pH.

OECD 105 is commonly requested to analytically determine the water solubility of a material for product development and to determine solubility performance.  Water solubility assessment can also be utilized in companion with a Water Accommodated Fraction determination of a test material, which is recommended for poorly soluble and insoluble materials undergoing biodegradability testing.

OECD 105 and other analytical methods that evaluate a material’s Physical/Chemical properties are commonly utilized to meet product registration requirements, such as EPA Pesticide registration Data Requirements outlined in 40 CFR Part 158. When testing for regulatory purposes, it is highly recommended to review testing requirements with the appropriate regulatory agency prior to project initiation.
